‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ a Sold Out Show at The Newton Theatre
NEWTON, NJ – The historic Newton Theatre was host to a sold out The Rocky Horror Picture Show event on Saturday, June 27.
While the weather was drizzly and unseasonably cold outside for the early start of summer, in the theatre the mood reflected upbeat fun as close to 700 guests enjoyed the cult classic.
The film, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year since its 1975 release, stars Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick in an amusing musical romp giving nod to the horror classics about a puritan engaged couple’s breakdown one evening at the home of scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter, where the pair was in for an experience of both of their lifetimes.
The event at The Newton Theatre included the film and the added treat of performers from The Home of Happiness, a troupe that acts as a shadow cast onstage as the film is rolling. The actors performed scenes and interacted with the audience.
As The Rocky Horror Picture Show is known for, there is other entertainment with the interactive nature of the film. The tradition of the hecklers yelling out amusing and colorful commentary at the screen was in full force on Saturday night, combined with all the other antics that are known to accompany this classic film. Flying toast, rice, cards and toilet paper, as well as a drenching with water guns were some of the highlights of the evening along with the film.
Prior to the film’s showing on the theatre’s new 30-foot screen with its digital projector, participants enjoyed a dance party and costume contest after the famed “Virgin Ritual,” with all the newbies to the Rocky Horror experience who were “sacrificed” and emblazoned each with a souvenir red “V” on their foreheads.
At the end of the experience, attendees left the theatre with smiles on their faces and high spirits and cheers, as was the atmosphere during the whole show.
The show was the first film event for The Newton Theatre, which will be showing weekly movies in between shows. Click here for The Newton Theatre website to check back for the upcoming film lineup.
