Picatinny Arsenal Above and Below the Surface
You’ve driven past it for years and probably know a few people who’ve worked there. But do you know that the present-day work combines with stewardship extending back centuries?
The Sparta Historical Society is pleased to welcome as their next guest speaker Picatinny Garrison Archaeologist and Cultural Resource Manager Jason Huggan. On Thursday evening, March 12, Mr. Huggan will share photos and maps related to both historical sites and archaeology within the Arsenal, including showing the recent find of a Civil War era LaFaucheux Revolver found in the summer of 2013.
Jason Huggan has been with Picatinny over 7 years and previously held similar positions at Fort Lee, VA and Fort Irwin, CA. Mr. Huggan earned his Masters degree in Archaeology and Heritage from the University of Leicester, UK and has worked in over 15 states across the continental U.S. in cultural resource management.
The accompanying late 1800s-era photo shows the former Lake Denmark Naval Ammunition Depot where the 1926 explosion occurred adjacent to Picatinny. You can view many more photos and stories on their award-winning website: https://www.pica.army.mil/ead/Cultural/PicatinnyHistoricDistricts/index.html
This event is at 7:30pm on Thursday, March 12, in the Sparta Ambulance Building at 14 Sparta Avenue, Sparta. Admission to this program is free to all members. Guests are invited to attend for a nominal charge of $1 per student, $3 per adult. For more information please contact Ed Fritsch at 973 729 0644.
