DWI and Hit and Run in Newton
NEWTON, NJ – On 9/3/15 at 9:15p.m., Newton Police officers responded to a parking lot at 5 Madison Street for a report of a hit and run accident.
Upon arrival, witnesses indicated that a white car had backed into a parked car and left the scene travelling north towards Spring Street. Within minutes, Special Officer Raul Couce, who was patrolling the Spring Street business district on bicycle, located and stopped a motor vehicle at the intersection of Spring and Main Street matching the description. Subsequently, the driver was identified as Laura Davis, age 24, of Madison Street, Newton and witnesses at the scene confirmed that she was the driver of the vehicle.
Further investigation revealed that Davis was intoxicated and she was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence. Additionally, it was determined that Davis had borrowed the car from a family friend, Roy Feeley, age 61, of Shore Drive, Montague who admittedly knew Davis had been consuming alcohol and may be intoxicated.
As a result, Davis was charged with the following offenses:
39:4-97 Careless Driving
39:4-129 Leaving the Scene of an Accident
39:4-130 Failure to Report an Accident
39:4-50 Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence
Feeley was also charged with:
39:4-50a Allowing a Person Under the Influence to Operate a Motor Vehicle
Feeley’s motor vehicle was impounded and Davis was released pending a 9/22/15 appearance in Newton Municipal Court.
