Skylanders Men’s Soccer Team Advances in Regional Tournament
NEWTON, NJ – October 28, 2013 – The Sussex County Community College SKYLANDERS men’s soccer team has advanced to the second round in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XIX Tournament with a 1-0 win over the County College of Morris TITANS. SKYLANDER goalie Josh Gates made an outstanding save to keep the game scoreless early in the second half. The winning goal was scored later in the half by Vito Cornish with an assist from Brad Van Treurenin what proved to be a tightly contested match played on Saturday, October 26th at the CCM field in Randolph. Morris was the number 7 seed in the tournament, and the SKYLANDERS the number 10 seed with a record of 10-7-1.
SKYLANDER Head Coach Frank Vernachio said, “I’m extremely proud of our team and the determined effort they sustained against an excellent opponent. We look forward to our next match on Tuesday, October 29th at 2:30 p.m. at number 2 seeded Manor College in Pennsylvania.”
SCCC offers intercollegiate competition in men’s and women’s soccer and basketball, men’s baseball, and women’s softball. SCCC is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) and adheres to the rules set forth by both organizations.
