Three Youth Pedestrians Struck by Motor Vehicle in Newton
NEWTON, NJ – On Saturday, November 28, 2015 at 4:16p.m., Newton Police responded to the intersection of Water Street and Clinton Street for a report of a pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle.
Upon arrival it was learned that Anthony Leonardo, age 75, of Liberty Street, Newton was operating a 1996 red Dodge Dakota and was in the process of turning left onto Water Street from East Clinton Street. Subsequent investigation revealed that while turning, Leonardo failed to observe 3 children (ages, 9, 9 & 12) who were crossing in a marked crosswalk with family members (while the walk sign was illuminated) and struck the trio.
As a result, all three children were transported to the Newton Medical Center by Atlantic and Hampton EMS for minor injuries.
Leonardo was issued summonses for the following:
NJS 39:4-36 Failure to Yield to a Pedestrian in a Crosswalk
NJS 39:4-97 Careless Driving
NJS 39:4-117 Special Pedestrian Signals – Motorist stopping for pedestrian walk signal when illuminated
