On Tuesday October 28, 2014, officers from the Newton Police Department, students, staff and faculty members will come together to informally discuss issues, build relationships, and drink some coffee. All college community members are invited to attend. The event will take place from 9 AM to 11 AM at the Sussex County Community College.
Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work on campus. The event will also be the kickoff of a new program on campus which will increase the visibility of Officers patrolling the college. Beginning next week, instead of Officers just driving through the college on patrol and responding to calls for assistance, Officers will park their vehicle and briefly walk around, visiting with students, faculty and staff.
This program, dubbed “Park, Walk & Talk”, is a community policing concept which has been implemented at other colleges, business areas and public locations to increase interaction, trust and crime prevention. This program fosters positive interaction between local law enforcement and the college community, allowing students and staff to see Officers in a different perspective.
The Coffee with a Cop event is a great way to introduce the “Park, Walk & Talk” program. It is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the country, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.
