NEWTON, NJ – October 3, 2013 – Sussex County Community College has launched a college-wide initiative called The Degree Advantage to strongly encourage students to obtain their associate degree or professional certificate before transferring to a four-year institution or into the workforce.

According to SCCC President, Dr. Paul Mazur, “The advantages that accrue to students who earn their associate degree prior to transfer to a four-year college or university are compelling.  The New Jersey Transfer Agreement guarantees credits from a completed associate degree will transfer seamlessly to a bachelor’s degree program at any of New Jersey’s public four-year colleges or universities. Students who receive their associate degree prior to transfer improve the likelihood they’ll be accepted at a private or out-of-state university. SCCC graduates have transferred to hundreds of private colleges throughout the country including top-tier and Ivy League universities.  Students who earn a higher education degree or certificate realize greater earning power and are more marketable.”

Dr. Mazur continued, “Parents also benefit from The Degree Advantage by taking advantage of the exceptional value we offer. The net savings in tuition to earn a bachelor’s degree at a state university after earning an associate degree at SCCC are about $48,000 and $94,000 if the student attends a private institution. As we all know, life can throw some curves at us and if a student fails to go on to earn a bachelor’s degree, for whatever reason, he or she can list their associate degree on their resume…far better than being limited to just saying, some college.  Economists predict that in the future employers will want more college graduates and highly-trained workers with professional certifications. Competition for top jobs will become even more intense and students need to capture every advantage they can.”

The Degree Advantage is being supported by the executive leadership, staff and faculty at SCCC. A signed pledge, led by the President, can be seen posted throughout the campus.  – The Degree Advantage program reflects SCCC’s commitment to student success and is consistent with the nation-wide College Completion Agenda that seeks to dramatically increase college completion rates.
