Newton Police Department: Narcotics Arrest

On October 3, 2013, surveillance was conducted on a residence at 91 Main Street, Newton by members of the Newton Detective Bureau and the Sussex County Narcotics Task Force in an effort to locate a resident of that address, specifically William Burford, age 34, who an active warrant existed for – charging him with Possession with the Intent to Distribute Narcotics. 

At approximately 2:30pm on 10/3/13, Burford was observed on the front porch of 91 Main Street, Newton.  Detectives from both agencies identified themselves to Burford and as they approached him, he ran into the residence before being subsequently apprehended and placed into custody.  At the time of his arrest, 50 bags of heroin and over an ounce of crack cocaine was located within his apartment.

As a result of the investigation, Burford was charged with the following offenses:

N.J.S. 2C:35-5a(1)b2  Distribution of Crack Cocaine,  a 2nd Degree

N.J.S. 2C:35-7.1(a)     Possession with Intent to Distribute In A Public Building Zone, 2nd Degree

N.J.S. 2C:35-5a1(b)3  Distribution of Crack Cocaine, 3rd Degree

N.J.S. 2C:35-5a1 (b)3  Possession with intent to Distribute Heroin, a 3rd  Degree

N.J.S. 2C:35-7  Possession with Intent to Distribute in a School Zone 3rd Degree 

 

The Honorable Judge N. Peter Conforti of the Sussex County Superior Court set bail at $100,000 with no 10% option and Burford was lodged in the Sussex County Correctional Facility in default of bail.
