A Sparta man is hospitalized after being stabbed in the chest and his roommate is in the Sussex County Jail after being charged with the attack. At 8:00 pm last night, the 23-year-old male victim entered the Lobby of the Sparta Police Department suffering from a knife wound to the left side of his chest.
The victim told assisting officers that he was attacked by his roommate, 22-year-old Kevin Rios. The pair shared a home located in the Sparta Lake Development. The victim who also suffered cuts, abrasions and bruising to his face was transported by the Sparta First Aid Squad and paramedics from St. Clares, Sussex to MorristownHospital where he underwent surgery last night (his condition is unknown at this time).
Cpl. Louis Takacs and Officer Kurt Morris located Rios a short time later at his home where he was arrested without incident. Rios was transported to police headquarters were he was processed. The knife used in the attack is a folding knife with a four-inch serrated blade and it was found in the possession of Rios.
Rios has been initially charged with; Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Possession of a Weapon to Use Unlawfully against a Person. His bail was set at $50,000.00 without a ten percent option. He was then lodged in the county jail.
Early this morning, Sparta Detectives along with Detectives from the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office executed Search Warrants on Rios’s residence and vehicle. Numerous pieces of additional evidence were seized but have yet to be processed. Additional charges are pending. Updates will be provided when available. Det. Sgt. Terrence Mulligan, Sgt. Joseph Pensado and Det. Keith Hannam are investigating.
