UNION, NJ –  In collaboration with Kean University, the Patriots’ Path Council Boy Scouts of America hosted its inaugural STEM University for Boy Scouts from across northern and central New Jersey.  The Scouts participated in a day of science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related activities on the Kean University Campus in Union, on Dec. 12, 2015.  The event was made possible by Alcoa Corporation, who was a major sponsor of the event.

STEM University faculty and students, along with Scouting volunteers from the council STEM committee, provided a variety of workshops, lectures and hands-on activities focusing on physics, mathematics, astronomy, robotics and engineering at Kean’s STEM Building (the New Jersey Center for Science, Technology & Mathematics) and Kean’s Planetarium.

Scouts who attended worked on requirements for the Shoot!  Nova Award.  Additionally, participants had rare access to the various Kean University STEM facilities including the Kean Planetarium and “The Cave”—a 3-D virtual environment that allows participants to experience scientific research in a whole new way.

Scouts learned how science, math and physics make projectiles shoot into space, how humans impact nature, and explored the wonders of space. Scouts concluded the day by meeting with the New Jersey Governor’s STEM Scholars to discuss STEM careers.
