SCCC Student Wins First Prize
NEWTON, N.J. – Lara-Sophie Pointner, an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) student at Sussex County Community College won first prize in the New Jersey Association of Life Long Learning’s (a professional association that encourages the growth and development of lifelong learning and lifelong learners in the state of New Jersey) statewide, Learner Writing Contest. The contest had four categories, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Memoir, and Poetry. Lara won first prize in the Non-Fiction category for her essay titled, “The Irony of Social Media and One World”. She also submitted a poem which will be published in the magazine.
Lara is an au pair from Olfen, Germany. She has spent the past year living with a family in Blairstown, NJ where she takes care of their three children. She began taking ESOL courses at the College in January to improve her English for her future career.
The New Jersey Association of Life Long Learning’s will recognize the writing skills of adult learners across the State by publishing a literary magazine of student work. Lara is also the only person to have pieces selected for the magazine in two separate categories.
