Town Promotes Fourth Annual Neighbors Helping Neighbors Event

Newton, NJ – The Town of Newton will be hosting its 4^th town-wide Neighbors Helping Neighbors Community Service Clean-Up event on Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon, commencing at the Town of Newton Municipal Building located at 39 Trinity Street, Newton, NJ.

One of the goals of the day is for residents, businesses and groups to join the community as volunteers to help clean up the parks, schools, streets, and parking lots of litter and recyclables.  Volunteers will also go to the homes of seniors citizens, veterans, or disabled residents, to assist with various property maintenance and clean-up issues including, but not limited to, grass mowing and clipping, planting, weeding, recycling, painting, garbage pickup and removal.  “It is our goal to have as much participation as possible,” stated Thomas S. Russo, Jr., Town Manager.  “By working together we can help keep our town clean for all to enjoy.”

The day starts at the Municipal Building at 8:30 a.m. with an appreciation continental breakfast (bagels, juice, coffee) and free t-shirt distribution for the first 100 participants, followed by assignments and instructions.  Assignments are given according to age and safety.  Garbage bags, rakes, and gloves will be provided.  The Town will also be providing, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Recycling Center on South Park Drive, a Mobile Paper Shredding Unit from IntelliShred of Frenchtown, NJ, so residents can bring unwanted documents (no business documents) to be properly shredded and destroyed.

Following the conclusion of volunteer activities at Noon will be a social event with pizza and refreshments at Memory Park in Newton.  “This will provide us with an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the day, discuss ways to improve the event for next year, as well as an opportunity to meet and greet new friends and neighbors from around town,” stated Newton Mayor Joseph A. Ricciardo.

Pastor Frank Leone and Christ Community Church will once again be co-sponsoring the event.  Other houses of worship, scouting groups, civic and community organizations, business owners, and residents are encouraged to join this important effort.
