Newton Fire Department Celebrates Newton Day with the Annual Firehouse 5K
NEWTON – The 2014 Newton Day festivities will “hit the ground running” this year as the Newton Fire Department hosts its first annual Firehouse 5K Run and Walk. The race will be held on June 15 at 9:00 am. It will begin at the intersection of Spring Street and Diller Avenue (near the Moose Lodge and 280 Spring Street – Camp Iliff). After completing a scenic tour through the historic Newton Cemetery and the High Point development, walkers and runners will gather on Spring Street in front of the Newton Fire Museum for the presentation of awards and prizes. Many will continue enjoying the visit with some food, music, and fun at the Newton Day Festival. Follow the parking signs, convenient at either the start or finish area.
“The Firehouse 5K will be a fun way for the department to celebrate Newton Day while raising funds to replace aging gear and equipment,” said Newton Firefighter Dan Finkle.” While the race is professionally directed, and well marked course is certified and sanctioned by a nationally recognized running and racing organization, we still plan on adding our own little touches to make sure that this is a race that nobody will forget.” Finkle cited cool mists of fog spraying runners from a fire truck as well as food, prizes, and other activities as some of the unique extras that participants will enjoy.
Participants are encouraged like us on Facebook, visit Firehouse5K.com for further information, or to register online link on the website. Registration will also be available at Firehouse on 56 Woodside Ave the night before 5-8 p.m., and race day at the starting area from 7:30 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. Teams, families, and those wishing to simply walk the course are welcome to participate. Awards range from 7 – 80+ and in 10 year age groups. Cool watches will be won for the young ones, while winners take home some valuables!
