Ice Rescue From Lake Hopatcong
On January 12, 2014 patrols responded to the area of 353 Lakeside Blvd for a person that fell through the ice. Upon arrival Sergeant Magrini and Officer Bianculli saw a male on the ice next to a section of open water. The victim had been on an ice sail boat that fell into this open section of water about 2 football fields off of Pickerel Point. A section of the mast and sail could still be seen by the officers. The 52 year old male victim yelled out that his leg was hurt. The victim was on the ice on the opposite side of this open area of water. The two officers suited up in ice rescue suits in case the victim fell into the water. The Hopatcong Fire Department, EMS and medics arrived. Rescuers tried to use a ladder to cross this open section of water. They were going to use the ladder as a bridge to get the victim onto their side of the ice, but it wasn’t long enough. Two Hopatcong Firemen in ice rescue suits were able to get the victim into a stretcher. They deployed a large blow up raft and were able to get him across the open section of water. He was taken to Morristown Hospital and later released. The NJSP arrived and were working on how to get the ice boat out of the lake.
