Bear Hibernating in a Crawl Space
HOPATCONG – Patrols went to a vacant home on Indian Trail for a possible bear hibernating in a crawl space. The home is vacant. The Realtor had called a company to come out and clean the home. When the worker went down the steps to the crawl space he saw old and new bear feces. He left and contacted the police. When the officers arrived, Sgt. O’Shea stood guard as Officer Janosko peered into the crawl space. There, Officer Janosko saw the head of a bear peering around some debris about 5 feet away. Officer Janosko and Sgt. O’Shea quickly left the area of the crawl space. The Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife were called. They advised that they would respond after the weekend to remove the bear. The realtor was advised to let anyone showing the home know about the bear in the crawl space until it can be removed.
